The social acceptance of marijuana has been a slow process According to CBSNEWS in the 1950s marijuana was considered to be not just a dangerous drug but a stepping stone to the use of heroin or even more dangerous controlled substances and in 1979 only 27 percent of Americans favored the legalization of marijuana Short term effects that were believed to be caused by marijuana were distorted perception problems with memory and learning loss of coordination trouble with thinking and problem solving increased heart rate or blood pressure and sometimes anxiety fear distrust or panic Conversely some people thought that marijuana use had benefits such as physical psychological and spiritual along with enhancing both sides of the brain So does marijuana create a negative altered state of consciousness or does it create a positive altered state of consciousness I believe that the use of marijuana creates a positive altered state of consciousness Marijuana is a drug because it alters the brains functions and control and is considered a depressant because the psychoactive effects give the user a relaxed feeling aznpanda2013 but that does not mean it does it in a bad way Marijuana has many physical benefits Many doctors have agreed that marijuana helps cancer patients through their chemotherapy treatments because of the side effects that occur There are many side effects such as throwing up pain and loss of appetite that allowing a patient to smoke marijuana the THC molecules counteracts the side effects Marijuana being a depressant and relaxing the body with help with pain it is also known to increase hunger so it will give a patient the desire to eat Marijuana relaxes skeletal muscles including muscles that constrain the ribs This efficient breathing has other far-reaching effects Specifically the brain receives more richly oxygenated blood and simultaneously receives a greater supply of blood because of the dilation in all brain capillaries and at the same time because of an increase in
