Music is essential to the growth of our children It continues to be an expression of emotion and a necessity of life While certain people believe it to be just sound others believe it helps improve our childrens development in many ways This includes language development increased IQ increased test scores and overall a harder working brain A child of music often has to tap into skills such as playing an instrument with their fingers and also has to have a listening ear for pitch and rhythm which is dominant in the left side of the brain whereas meter and timbre are dominant in the right side These are the key stimulants of the brain effecting areas such as the cortex and hippocampus making music beneficial When young children listen to familiar words in a song the neural transmitters in their brains are firing away and their brains are building connections to the sounds they are hearing and the words they are singing Doing things to keep time such as clapping hands stamping feet and using rhythm instruments in time to music develops important pre-reading skills Young children recognize words sounds rhythms tones and pitches long before they talk sing or dance The more music children have in their lives the better they will speak and readIn 2002 Christopher Johnson a professor of music education and music therapy found a 22 percent increase in English test scores and a 20 percent increase in math scores in the elementary level where music was a key variable This is a very accurate finding due to the fact music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention making predictions and updating events in memory For the most part the majority of the information is processed on the other side of the brain This is the opposite part of processing language In theory This would mean multitasking would be simple You can think to yourself while also
