The Berlin Wall was a major symbol of the Cold War put up by the USSR who occupied East Berlin and considered communism to be the best economic system The Wall divided East and West Berlin due to the fact that the West declined the practice of communism Before the Wall was constructed Berliners could freely cross the border to take care of errands while East Berliners travelled west to work for a greater exchange rate This all came to an end when Stalin decided to end the relations between East and West Berlin The blockade of Berlin had a drastic effect on German society and its inhabitants causing many families and friends to be torn apart for decades Germans to lose their jobs astonishing deaths and lack of transportation One of the effects of the infamous Berlin Wall was that families and neighbors were separated for decades Families friends and lovers could no longer cross the border to meet their loved ones or watch shows or plays As Brian Ladd mentioned the wall was put up in a single day Virtually the entire perimeter of West Berlin was indeed sealed on August 13 1961 but with barbed wire Over the years the first hastily erected block-and-mortal wall in turn replaced more than once by taller and stronger barriers built with prefabricated concrete forms Meaning citizens of East Berlin unexpectedly woke up on August 13 to see a wall made out of barbed wire separating them from West Berlin Whichever side one had slept on during the night before the wires were put up they were stuck on that side for years The people were very angry and devastated about this inhuman act This led to people to start protesting against the wall while others made the attempt to escape and get through the other side of the wall Many East Germans attempted to escape into West Berlin Nearly half of these people
