To what extent does Franklin D Roosevelt deserve to be considered a great president During the time that Roosevelt was president he faced the two greatest crises of the twentieth century namely the great depression and World war two Some have labelled him one of the greatest presidents of the United States of America others have referred to him as the plague that the US could not get rid of since he was the only president to be elected four times to office However in response to the criticism Roosevelt could be seen to having rose to the dilemma fulfilling his promise I pledge to you I pledge to myself to a new deal for the American people When Roosevelt was running for office he made a bold statement advocating the need for social reform since many American citizens were hoping that unlike in years gone by the US government would intervene in domestic issues just as much as they did with foreign invaders He also planned to accomplish the three Rs relief recovery reform People were worried that Roosevelts policies would become too radical since the ideas he was proposing included public works money the reduction of agricultural overproduction public power and conservation unemployment insurance and stock exchange regulations to name but a few However since unemployment was between thirteen and fifteen million and poverty was rife people were willing to go along with a strong leader whose policies appealed since they were told they had nothing to fear from his proposed policies since the only thing we have to fear is fear itself One onlooker commented that the country was in such a state of confused desperation that it would have followed almost any leader anywhere he chose to go Roosevelts plan of relief started in what was later to be called the 100 days Most measures taken in this period were short-term measures dealing
