Loraine Vivian Hansberry 3rd was born on May 19th 1930 in Chicago Illinois Both of Hansberry parents were continually involved in political matters her father ran for congress and her mother was a ward committee woman They were also intensely associated with causes supporting African American rights From early on Hansberry was immersed in an intellectual surrounding dedicated to social and political change He father Carl was a realtor and deeply committed civil rights proponent who was v very active in the civil rights movements Hansberrys parents were intellectuals and activists their home was often visited by famous African Americans such as Paul Robeson and WEB DuboisHansberry grew up in a middle class family which was more than that of most African Americans that were in poverty They lived on the South Side of Chicago and when Hansberry was eight years old her and her family moved in to an all white neighborhood causing her to attend a predominately white public school The family faced racial discrimination and her father was put in a legal battle from buying houses in certain neighborhoods This lead to the Supreme Court case of Hansberry v Lee where the Hansberrys won but they were still subject to living in a racist neighborhood The ruling did little to change Chicagos segregated housing practices but it was a startAfter High School Hansberry attended the University of Wisconsin Madison for two years She also took classes at Roosevelt College in Chicago and the University of Guadalajara in Mexico At Wisconsin Madison she attended a school performance of Juno and the Paycock by the Irish playwright Sean OCasey it left such a strong impression on her that she decided to become a write In 1950 she dropped out of college and moved to New York City not only taking writing classes but worked as an associate editor of Paul Robesons Freedom Newspaper Hansberry met Langston Hughes and other famous
