The Marx Brothers were three American brothers who became famous for their zany antics in motion pictures Trained as musicians they began their careers in vaudeville with their mother and aunt as the Six Musical Mascots Leonard Marx Chico Born 3221887- 10111961- Specialized in distorted logic and Italian dialect routines He also played the piano in a brothel He was the eldest brother and the last one to be recruited into the family act According to Harpos autobiography the group was performing on stage in their early vaudeville days when they suddenly noticed that Chico was playing the piano Harpo and Groucho leapt into the orchestra pit and the three started clowning around with the piano This was one of the Marx Brothers first forays into the improvisational comedy they would become so well known for Chicos nickname came from his pursuit of women It was originally Chicko but when the brothers decided to use their nicknames on the acts programs a typesetter made a mistake and the name has been spelled Chico ever since Adolph Marx Harpo Born 11231888 - 9281964- played the harp and chased around girls He communicated in pantomime Played a solo tour in the Soviet Union He joined the family act because his mother was looking to add to it just when Harpo had become unemployed Harpo began to develop the pantomime for which he eventually became so well known but his roles in their sketches involved speaking until he read one review The review complimented Harpos excellent and hilarious pantomime style but claimed the effect was completely spoiled when he spoke Harpo realized he couldnt outtalk Groucho or Chico and shouldnt even try He never spoke another word on stage or in front of a camera as a Marx Brother Harpos nickname came from the harp that he had worked into his act and that he played in nearly every film Julius Marx Groucho Born 1021890 -
