The Byzantine Empire was a beacon of light with a dark side Lead by rulers who exercised absolute power and architects who pushed beyond Romes engineering marvels the Byzantines constructed the ancient worlds longest aqueducts virtually impenetrable city walls and a colossal domed cathedral that defied the laws of natureThe Byzantine empire was the dominate civilization during the dark ages Constantine was emperor in 324 AD After two decades of bloody civil war he has finally seized control of the entire Rome empire Shortly after ascending to the helm he plots out the area of a new capital for Nova Roma the city of Constantinopolis He wanted to shift away from the old center of Rome in order to pull away from old rivalries and political interests He replaces it with something he could mold It was fashioned after ancient Rome but incorporated the new religion of Christianity which was on the riseBy the mid fourth century Constantinopolis was dying of thirst Constantines succors took on a ambitious feat to bring water to the city constructing over 400 mile of aqueducts that would bring a supply of fresh water Once the water was brought to the city they had to store it this way during the dryer months there was still a supply in reserve They built over 150 subterranean tanks in low lying areas Vancant land was in short supply and these tanks could be built on which provided more room for the city to grow With the addition of water Constantinople swelled to almost a half a million people The city became a target for those looking for wealth The Huns a nomadic group of marauders had been attacking Italy but saw Constantinople as a new area to set their sights on The Byzantines then created a fortress to protect its vulnerable location located on a fault line Theodosius II finished the construction of the triple layer of defense consisting of walls moats
