Introduction The reason I chose to do my research paper on this topic is because I know a family thathas a child with Tourette Syndrome TS I have known this child since she was six years old and her name is Alicia I would like to explore some of the trials Alicia has faced and will face as she grows up with TS What I know now is that Alicia was diagnosed at nine years of age as Attention Deficit Disorder ADD and a partial dyslexic When she was 13 years ofage she was diagnosed as an A-Typical Tourette because she would get tics in her sleep To substantiate this diagnosis she was evaluated at Boston Childrens Hospital Butler Hospital and Yale University Hospital At Yale her diagnosis was changed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD dyslexic and TS I feel by acquiring more knowledge on T S and its related disorders I will have a better understanding to help support Alicia and her family in their time of need History The disorder is named for Dr Georges Gilles de la Tourette 1857-1904 the pioneering French neurologist One of the first descriptions of motor tics enchoalia involuntary repetition of the speech of others and coproplalia involuntary and effectively inappropriate swearing was reported by the 19th century French neurologist Jean- Marc Itard His patient the Marquise de Dampierre was a French noble women who developed motor tics at the age of 7 years and shortly thereafter developed involuntary vocalizations consisting of screams
