Jane begins in the book as a meek and depressed child living in very undesirable conditions Mrs Reed has been nothing but cruel to her blaming her for her sons faults When Mrs Reed tries to get her to go back to the nursery to get out of the way she breaks She lashes out at Mrs Reed saying I am not deceitful if I were I should say I loved you but I declare I do not love you I dislike you the worst of anybody in the world except for John Reed and this book about the liar you may give to your girl Georgina for it is she who tells lies and not I This catches Mrs Reed off guard She is not used to being spoken to in such a manor Jane now knows Mrs Reeds weakness and this allows her to be able to grow and mature as a person as well as finding her calling in life What she really wants to do with herself Jane is then sent to the Lowood School where she is not treated much better due to Mrs Reed who spread the rumor that she is a wicked girl The only companion she finds who is her own age is a girl named Helen Disease soon spreads in Lowood and Helen falls sick Just before Helen dies Jane goes to see her Helen is aware that she is dying and offers Jane comfort by saying I am sure there is a future state I believe God is good I can resign my immortal part to him without any misgiving God is my Father God is my friend I love Him and I believe He love meYou will come to the same region of happiness Jane is comforted by this knowing she will see Helen again someday and she sleeps in peace next to Helen When Jane wakes the next day Helen does not She
