Colonization and Housewifization Western female thought through the centuries has identified the relationship between patriarchy and gender as crucial to the womans subordinate position For two hundred years patriarchy precluded women from having a legal or political identity and the legislation and attitudes supporting this provided the model for slavery The division of labor among men and women is based on separation and subordination and also related to the relationship between man and nature The rise of science and technology strained the relationship of mankind and Mother Earth The abandonment of nature lead to the rise of dualism with women and eventually the polarization of both The first example of exploitation can be seen via the Europeans The conquering of North and South America and the Asian peninsula released the men from their dependence on the women of Europe The removal of the previous inhabitants of the Americas lead to the origin of slave labor on the plantation Thus the progress of the European comes from exploiting their women exploiting nature and exploiting other groups of peoples and their lands Although patriarchy is arguably the oldest example of a forced or exploitative division of social activities and clearly existed before it was ever examined by todays society the features of patriarchy had been accepted as natural in substance The concepts of gender the family and the unequal division of labor underpinned by a theory of patriarchy that has come to reveal how it operates to subordinate women and privilege men often at womens expense Heinsohn and Knieper further show how the household and household production as being a key site of womens subordination but acknowledges that the domestic area is not the only one that women participate in The concept of patriarchy explains the relationship between womens subordination in the private and public arenas by showing that they work equally to achieve this subordination as well as supporting reflecting and maintaining patriarchy itself
