In the Odyssey written by Homer translated by Allen Mandelbaum loyalty is one of the main moral lessons taught throughout the book In Greek society loyalty is very important because it helps to hold alliances together and in turn protect and help people in times of need Loyalty is one of the most important attributes of a person and this is shown in many ways There are many examples of loyalty throughout the book Odysseus shows loyalty by not leaving his men behind at Circes home and by leaving Calypsos island to return to his family Penelope exhibits loyalty by unraveling the shroud to keep from having to marry one of the suitors and by confronting the suitors when she hears their plans to try to kill Telemachus Finally Eumaeus shows his loyalty but continuing to do his job as swine herder for Odysseus and by being hospitable to Odysseus when he shows up in the form of a beggar Odysseus loyalty is clearly shown towards his men when Odysseus men land on an island and go on a mission to find the Circes house Once they found the house and they had drunk she struck them with her wand then drove them off to pen them in their sties Theyd taken on the bodies bristles snouts and grunts of hogs Unbeknownst to the men the food and wine she had given them would turned them into swine Eurylochus the only man who did not go into Circes house therefore still in human form goes back to the ship to tell Odysseus what happened When Eurylochus arrives at the ship he tries to persuade Odysseus to not go back and save the men and instead recommends With those we have lets sail away for we may still escape the evil day To this Odysseus says I must go however I cannot forgo a task so necessarythis I owe This shows how faithful and loyal
