With the widespread advent of the personal computer and the internet people now have the ability to connect on a global basis allowing them to obtain share and exchange information This technology has also given rise to violent video games that can be played either against a computer-generated foe or online against human beings Many of the most popular video games involve thousands of people playing against each other The goal is always the same kill your opponent while avoiding being killed by him or her The popularity of these games is not limited to the United States People all over the world are playing them Unfortunately so are a large number of children While it can be argued that adults are less likely to be adversely affected by these games the same cannot be said for children There have been many discussions about the merits of allowing children to play video games that embrace violence as their sole purpose or goal Gerard Joness essay Violent Media Is Good for Kids even argues that playing these types of electronic games helps children to solve problems but sadly this is not the case Playing violent video games is harmful to children because it creates desensitization and promotes aggressiveness Most arguments claiming children are unaffected by playing video games claim that there is no proof these games affect a childs brain or cause them to commit acts of violence The problem with these arguments is that they contradict well documented scientific evidence that a childs brain is different from an adult brain and that children exhibit immaturity and irresponsibility which they are unable to control This is why minors cannot vote serve on juries or marry without parental consent Vessey and Lee 4 This lack of neurological development allows for what neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists call increased priming Human memory consists of many sets of neural nodes
