Our society has become known for its abundance of material wealth and rushed and crazy lives All of the social norms of society have many dangers and are explained through the literary works of Matthew Kelty Erich Fromm May Sarton and Henry David Thoreau The writers suggest that some of the dangers of following the larger societys norms include becoming a slave to technology becoming consumption crazy while letting all the little things throw us off track and lacking an identity Some ways that we can battle these norms include making humanism a priority over industrialism and by living a rich and independent lifeOne of the dangers of following the larger societys norms includes becoming a slave to technology It is obvious that society cannot function without a phone in their hand or some other piece of technology They do not find happiness in experience but instead through pushing the right button Fromm 1090 As Fromm says In their search for the button some go to psychoanalyst some go to church and some read self-help books But while it is impossible to find the button for happiness the majority are satisfied with pushing the buttons of cameras radios television sets and watching science fiction become reality Fromm 1090 They do not experience happiness or fulfilled lives because they are relying on other things such as technology to make them happy instead of finding out on their own what their source of happiness isAnother danger of following societys norms includes becoming consumption crazy Our society always wants to have the newest technology or latest fashion and is never satisfied with what they already have As Thoreau says We are ruined by luxury and heedless expense by want of calculation and a worthy aim Thoreau 1129 Because we are always buying more and more material things we are never completely content with what we have because each time we buy something new that initial surprise
