Greasy Lake by T Coraghessan Boyle is a story that follows the night in the life of three teenage boys who consider themselves to be the toughest guys in town seeking for some thrill on a boring summer night As the night continues so does their search for adventure as they find themselves in the midst of trouble Upon arriving to Greasy Lake they mistakenly decide to disturb passengers inside a parked vehicle whom they believed to be mutual friends inside a parked vehicle They instead interrupt the romantic encounter and provoke the dangerous character inside the car causing him to respond violently and trigger a fight After a series of horrific events which included nearly killing the dangerous character attempting rape and encountering a corpse the narrator and his friends realize just what comes with the bad boy status The central idea of Boyles story is that the entitlement that one seeks in life can ultimately be unfulfilling in the end The narrator and his friends ended up finding the thrill they were seeking for yet after totaling all the horrible circumstances that occurred they no longer wanted to live up to the bad guy status In the beginning of the story the narrator is set on seeking recognition as the typical dangerous character as he boasts about their torn-up leather jackets the toothpicks in our mouths and his mention of sniffing glue and ether and what somebody claimed was cocaine Boyle 144 After the long series of events of the night the narrator finally realizes rock bottom is not too far ahead as he brushes skin with the rotting flesh of the corpse He emerges from the swamp viewing life from a new perspective seemingly wanting to return back to his old conventional ways I pushed myself from the mud and stepped out into the open By now the birds had begun to take over for the crickets and dew lay
