I was ten when I realized that although telling a lie is an appealing option in the moment it only has bad outcomes I wave at my parents as the light haze of engine fuel disappears from view Its my parents anniversary and they are going out for supper and leaving me home alone As I turn around to walk into the house Samuel our pet Chihuahua runs out the door I shut it and go into the lounge where our movie collection is I drag the piano bench towards me so I can reach one of the movies on the top shelf I insert the disk into the DVD player and settle in on the couch Two hours later with the movie just beginning to roll the credits I get off the couch eject the disk and place it back the way I found it I carelessly shove the bench across the room It glides across the waxy pinewood floor and collides directly into the piano resulting in the entire structure to tremor I then notice my Grandma Ellens elegant maroon urn swaying sideways on the shaking piano mantel My mind screams at me to dive for it but I know there is no hope of saving the situation I watch helplessly as it plummets through the air The glass shatters into thousands of pieces and a cloud of ashes spill across the floor I stare in horror for what feels like hours Finally I regain control of myself and I frantically try to think of what to do I race to the kitchen and grab the dustpan and broom I sweep up all the remnants of the disaster and dispose them in the back alley trash bin Just as I place the dustpan back in the closet I hear the click of a key twisting in
