Appreciating parents and showing love towards them is one of the most important things within a family In his poem My Papas Waltz Theodore Roethke wants to explain in several ways how the father was acting with him by focusing on the whiskey In Mother Picking Produce the author Richard Blanco communicates by describing about the strong relationship he had with his mother by focusing on the wedding ring Both poets express different feelings towards their parents but there is an act of appreciation at the same time Author Blanco shows the tone of happiness and the poet Roethke expresses the tone of sadness In My Papas Waltz the author Roethke shows the different ways in which the father was acting with him and this proves the tone of sadness Roethke starts the poem by showing how drunk his father was By focusing on being drunk instead of looking after his family this shows selfishness The father is married and he was hardly taking care of his family For example Roethke states We romped until the pans Slid from the kitchen shelf my mothers countenance could not unfrown itself 5-8 This displays that in the midst of chaos the father was not around to help his family The writer was trying to hold onto his father so he doesnt fall This was in a way controlling because the father is not aware of the actions done towards his son The poet Roethke stated The whiskey on your breathcould make a small boy dizzy But I hung on like death such waltzing was not easy 1-4 The concrete image of the whiskey expresses the tone of sadness In the direct quotation Roethke describes how the whiskey is making him faint because the father was drunk The symbolic meaning of whiskey is about battle and abuse The small boy is feeling distracted Instead of making
