In this journal article the authors have done an in-depth study of the development of rocking in children who are blind Basing their research on the general idea that all blind children rock that this stereotypical idea should be abandoned and that parents and teachers regularly maintain that rocking disrupts learning getting jobs fitting in socially and being viewed as normal McHugh Pyfer 82 Many perspectives have been noted including but not limited to psychological developmental physiological and behavioral In this study the four individuals who participated needed to meet the following criteria 1 congenitally blind from ROP with a visual status of light projection or less 2 ages 6-18 3functioning cognitively within the average range or better 4 ambulatory without assistive devices 5lacking hearing impairments and 6 designated by their parents and teachers as exhibiting high levels of rocking behaviorMcHugh 84 These stipulations were designed to exclude participants with early or partial sight mental retardation severe motoric restriction because of physical disability and multiple sensory deficits factors that may by themselves influence the incidence of rockingMcHugh 84 Methods used encompassed in-depth interviews observations psychomotor assessments and reviews of school and other recordsMcHugh 85 In the various medical histories of each participant repercussions of both premature birth and ROP consisted of numerous early lengthy hospital stays multiple surgeries and other medical obstacles In the history of the rocking patterns all participants reported that the rocking started previous to the age of four Some started the rocking behavior as early as 14 months old others had rocking mentioned in records as far back as ages 2 and 3 Multiple interventions were used for all four participants reminders persuasion punishment reasoning warnings of potential negative consequences of the rocking behavior on social aspects incentives with money or food and a variety of other incentives Further investigation into the rocking helps to determine the
