Antigone is a tragedy by Sophocles which portrays a conflict between mans law and the laws of the gods The play begins with Antigone and her sister Ismene finding out that their brothers Eteokles and Polyneices have killed each other in a battle Antigone tells Ismene that Kreon the king of Thebes has ordered an honourable burial for Eteokles but ordered that Polyneicess body should be left to rot above-ground and that anyone who buries him should be punished When Antigone asks Ismene for help in burying Polyneicess body Ismene refuses to defy the king and Antigone offers a ritual burial to Polyneices alone The news of the burial of Polyneicess body is given to Kreon by the Sentry and Kreon demands that the Sentry discover who has done it Eventually Antigone is brought to Kreon and and she declares that Kreons order is against the laws of the gods Kreon is stunned that a woman has ignored his order and sentences Antigone and Ismene to death Then his son Haimon who was to marry Antigone hears that Antigone will be executed He threatens Kreon that the death of Antigone will lead to another death and runs away Kreon decides to change the method of Antigones execution starving her to death in isolation which does not involve people in the city The prophet Teiresias advises Kreon that the gods do not approve of his leaving unburied body of Polyneices or punishing Antigone He also warns Kreon that his son Haimon will be punished on account of his profane behaviour Kreon reconsiders and reverses his orders he decides to free Antigone and performs burial rites for Polyneices However when Kreon arrives to release Antigone he finds out that she has hanged herself and Haimon stabs himself and dies The Messenger informs Kreon of the death of Eurydice the queen who commits suicide after hearing about her sons death The play ends with Kreon blaming in
