In the play The Seagull Anton Chekhov dramatizes the lives of characters that are dissatisfied with their lives seeking for love fame or happiness In his play Chekhov includes the hopeless love attachments among the characters that are trying to figure themselves out and find their paths for the future The characters in the play can be generally categorized as fixed or free based on their characteristic and desire in the play Fixed characters are those with narrow and limited minds with no ambitions in their future They are imaginatively trapped and are unwilling to change their perspective in life However free characters are the symbolic meaning of the title itself The Seagull Chekhov describes the free characters as those who are willing to change and believe in their dreams They are risk takers who go after what they want without letting anything get in the way of their achievements Setting goals and aiming for them is one of the explorations in The Seagull But really the only way of making sense of The Seagulls exploration is to believe that giving up is not what creates your own individual and its certainly wont make you go all the way to your dreamsOne critic Virginia Scott argues Each child is like or potentially like one or more of the adults This is a great example showing how Nina Zarietchnaya wants to become as successful as Irina Arkadina by having so much attention and going after fame Nina is a young girl who is the daughter of a rich landowner She looks up to Arkadina and wants to become like her They both fall into the free category by being open minded about their career and are willing to do way more to achieve in their goals Arkadina is a famous actress who is self absorbed and somewhat selfish The following quote states how formal and respectful Nina can be towards Arkadina I am delighted to meet
