Andy Warhol Andy Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola in 1928 Although various dates were given as his date of birth Andys two older brothers and a birth certificate show that he was born on the 6th of August He was born in Pittsburgh as the son of Slovak Immigrants Julia and Andrej Warhola After High school Andy studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh He graduated in 1949 where he then moved to New York and worked as an illustrator for magazines such as Vogue and Harpers Bazaar He was soon one of New Yorks most sought of and successful commercial illustrators His work was also exhibited in various venues during the 1950s as well as his first group show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1956 The 1960s were probably the most prolific decade for Warhol many of the paintings that he created during that decade are still popular to this very day such as Cambpells Soup Cans Disasters and Marilyns As well as being a painter Warhol also produced several films such as Chelsea Girls Empire and The Closet In 1968 Warhol survived a shooting from Valerie Solanis who was the founder and sole member of SCUM Society for Cutting Up Men The attempt was almost fatal and Warhol was hospitalized for almost two months Sonalis later said that he had too much control over my life In the 1970s Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and also renewed his focus on painting He also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol from A to B and back again He was now a firmly established 20th Century artist as well as an International Celebrity and his work was exhibited in galleries all around the world In the 1980s he created two cable television shows Andy Warhols In TV in 1982 and Andy Warhols Fifteen Minutes in 1986 On February 22nd 1987 Andy Warhol
