An eighty-nine year struggle for Indias independence was finally concluded in 1947 textbook This struggle started in 1858 when the British pushed themselves into India As a result the British invasion of India brought social and economic alterations into the country which resulted in the destruction of many Indian traditional values However in the early 1920s Mohandas Gandhi was starting his resistance to end British rule in a method known as Satyagraha textbook This method was nonviolent and consisted of protests marches sit-ins and strikes The effectiveness of Mohandas Gandhi in unifying India was proved to be successful due to his philosophy of nonviolence and his enforcement of disobedience Due to Gandhis ability to improve womens rights his non-violent protests and his sacrifices Gandhi was able to lead India to its independence In a Muslim society women were made subordinate to men They were expected to obey their fathers and once they were married they had to obey their husband and his father Many Muslim societies often required the women to remain secluded in their homes and had to conceal their faces by wearing a veil when they were not with people within their family Quataert 582 Simple acts like these made the men feel superior to the women However Mohandas Gandhi believed that Intellectually mentally and spiritually woman is equivalent to a male and she can participate in every activity Document 11 With the encouragement of Mohandas Gandhi the rights of women slowly began to unravel and they gradually began to gain more rights One of Gandhis main ambitions was to persuade Indias government to give them their independence from Great Britain Unlike his intentions Indias struggle for liberty often led to an agglomeration of savagery Since he was inordinately against violence Gandhi stressed his reasoning of nonviolence and his compulsion of
