Intervention DescriptionNarrative therapy is one intervention to help address in-school bullying that was initially developed by both Michael White and David Epston Butler Platt 2008 White Epston 1990 Yarhouse 2008 It starts within the school but is more effective when the families are involved in the process such as with the family and school treatment model Butler Platt 2008 There is flexibility in how it is implemented depending on the targeted populations but the narratives can be developed in one-on-one sessions with a counselor or therapist or a school-wide program such as Get Empathy2013 Sexual Identity Therapy is a sub-set of narrative therapy focusing on helping the client to navigate on identifying and communicating ones sexual identity Yarhouse 2008 Although this is specific to sexual identity which is different than gender identity it can also be used for transgender-identified students that may also identify as gay lesbian or bisexual as well as transgender Additionally it can be modified to instead cover gender identity This helps students for example to briefly describe their own experience and what came of it in a way that can help others relate It is also modified so that the problem is not defining the person instead externalizing the problem at hand Butler Platt 2008 Posed by the therapist or facilitator landscape of action questions help the student gain insight to when the problem occurs Butler Platt 2008 Landscape of consciousness then helps merge the previous two components by using a strength perspective on how the student has 1 Overcome the initial problem and 2 Instills a positive self-image Butler Platt 2008While this can be used as one intervention it can co-exist with a larger treatment plan Butler Platt 2008 As previously mentioned having the family on board with treatment helps re-write the victim story and helps build resilience within the family as working through the problem together thus taking some of the pressure off
