It has been 17 years since autism spectrum disorders ASDs was included as one of disability categories under the individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA in 1997 IDEA 1999 Reber 2012 Although students with ASDs only constitute about 58 of the student population served under IDEA ASD is the fastest- and continually-growing population in special education US Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics 2012 The most recent ASD prevalence report indicates a 78 increase as comparing 2008 data with 2002 data collected by the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network Centers for Disease Control and prevention 2012 The report shows a continuous increasing trend in identifications of ASD throughout the years as of this year an estimated 1 in 88 births in the United States are diagnosed with ASDs Baio 2012 Centers for Disease Control and prevention 2013 ASD is a heterogeneous complex neurodevelopmental disorder Geschwind Levitt 2007 The causes for most ASDs are still unknown Smith Wick 2008 Without identified cause for ASDs except for Rett Syndrome which has been removed from ASD in the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-V the diagnosis of ASD has been relied on the characteristics described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders In the past two decades the forth the edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV 1994 had served as a guideline for the diagnosis of ASD In the DSM-IV ASDs include autistic disorder Asperger Disorder Childhood Disintegrative Disorder Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified PDD-NOS and Rett syndrome se DSM-IV 1994 DSM-IV-TR 2000 In May of 2013 the newest edition of DSM DSM-V is published There are some major revisions pertaining to the diagnostics criteria for ASDs First Rett syndrome that has a known generic cause is excluded from ASDs Second the childhood disintegrative disorder is also eliminated from the DSM-V due to its rarity and possibility
