Regional unrests and civil wars have become common in various countries These have consequently caused untold sufferings to the victims of these unrests as well severe economic impacts As a result countries which are marred by wars and other conflicts have had to face a severe struggle in the search for peace and economic recovery Additionally victims of the civil unrests have had to flee their country in search for a safe haven in neighboring countries This has caused an influx of refugees and a sprawl of refugees camps in the neighboring countries Guatemala is one such country where civil unrests have caused havoc loss of life and property to the citizens This paper seeks to examine the core dilemmas facing the Guatemalan society its democratic institutions and leaders as well as the social movements depicted in the Quiet RevolutionariesPeace versus justicePeace and political stability are paramount in any nation that believes in democracy and the rule of law However such is not the case for the Guatemalans who had to unite together irrespective of their social status as they tried to seek justice for their country men and women who were being executed by the government As a result guerrilla revolutionaries were formed in a bid to seek justice to the victims of the social injustices meted unto the people by the government Afflitto 2007 Therefore justice was a fundamental prerequisite in ensuring the political stability and democracy of the Guatemalans who lost their relatives during the civil unrests that prevailed throughout the country Contrary to the belief of Guatemalans in seeking justice as a way of ensuring the success of democracy and post conflict reconciliation such success cannot be realized without the prevalence of peace Many nations worldwide owe their success in democracy to the prevailing peace while countries which are ever on war have never realized the success of democracy and economic development Institutions of justice can never prevail in a war-torn
