Financial instability within a household is potentially detrimental to a childs development The development of impoverished children is endangered beginning in the early years of childhood Malnutrition is one of the common issues low income families encounter in America and Africa According to a recent study Reducing Child Malnutrition by Lawrence Haddad and colleagues children who live in poverty will most likely be malnourished due to the lack of nutritious food and clean water Since sanitary water is inaccessible hygiene also becomes an issue Moreover a child may become mentally or emotionally instable living in poverty Abuse and neglect is common among low income families and it results in the release of stress hormones an increase in heart rate and an increase in blood pressure The financial status of low income families affects a childs physical and psychological development more than high income families because they are more inclined to suffer from malnutrition and live in an environment which is hazardous to their healthMalnutrition is a common problem with children in low income families According to the article Reducing Child Malnutrition How Far Does Income Growth Take Us 374 percent of children under the age of five are underweight in developing economies in 1980 The percentage of underweight children in developing countries has gradually decreased ever since In developing areas 150 million children stayed underweight and 182 million stayed short for their age In Africa around the same time the numbers of children that are underweight have been increasing The article also mentions that more income means more investment towards healthy food better health care centers and sanitary water Since poor families are not able to afford medical care they are not able to get regular checkups for their children Surveys and studies on household and country that were conducted indicated that higher incomes are often associated with less malnutrition Haddad and Alderman 2003 Furthermore total calorie and protein intake is associated with higher incomes
