Americans are faced with an ever-growing problem of violence Our streets have become a battleground where the elderly are beaten for their social security checks where terrified women are viciously attacked and raped where teen-age gangsters shoot it out for a patch of turf to sell their illegal drugs and where innocent children are caught daily in the crossfire of drive-by shootings We cannot ignore the damage that these criminals are doing to our society and we must take actions to stop these horrors The two articles I chose are about whether or not the availability of guns in America increases the levels of gun violence In Lisa Stolzenberg and Stewart J DAlessios article they examined the effect of gun manufacturing and imports on murder rates in the United States They found that increased gun production resulted in higher homicide rates In another study they found that a gun may encourage an individual to initiate crime against others who would otherwise appear too invulnerable to challenge According to the study offenders frequently use guns to intimidate and control their victims They also found that guns were more commonly used in homicides where the attacker was older and likely to be weaker than the victim who was younger and stronger Guns are used to overcome victim invulnerability rather than to fatally injure the victim They found that approximately forty-one percent of male victims were attacked with a gun and only twenty-nine percent of women were attacked by people with a gun They also found that gun owners purchase a gun for protection against crime Stolzenberg and DAlessio reported that people who own guns for self-defense were more likely not only to see crime as a serious problem but also fear criminal victimization They also noted that people in areas with high crime rates were more likely to own a gun for personal protection Gun control activists claim that gun violence in this country has gotten
