One can ask any student or teacher the main thing that every class is focused on and that response would be end of the year testing in the spring These tests are always high stakes determining if a student will pass or fail a class graduate and sometimes if a teacher will receive a raise or keep his job With all these factors at stake teachers have had to change the way they teach in many ways The emphasis on high stakes testing hinders how well students actually learn the material taught In many circumstances high stakes tests like LEAP IOWA and ILEAP are factors in job security for teachers If the results are not good or if there is no improvement a teacher could end up losing his job over a standardized test This has resulted in many teachers basically teaching for the test so that they are able to stay employed With such a large emphasis on high stakes testing in schools there is no time for actual student mastery of a subject With teachers teaching at such a fast pace just to cover everything that could be on that test there is no time for higher order thinking and actual learning of the material This is causing a problem because although students may somewhat know the skills that they have been taught they are not able to recall them completely from year to year resulting in a student never completely mastering a subject Math is a prime example of this If a student has a basic amount of knowledge on multiplication from a previous year but did not learn it completely because there was no time there is no way that this student can be successful in their next level of math such as algebra or geometry Everything builds on each other and with teachers having to focus on trying to cover everything on these test schools run into the problem of
