After a war has ended the suffering does not cease For those soldiers who return home are not only wounded physically but emotionally they are forever scarred by the horrors of war This is the case for Conrad Ferrell a young Marine veteran of the Iraqi War In Roxana Robinsons Sparta Conrad Ferrell is faced with the challenge of making the transaction between military life and civilian life He finds himself stuck between multiple realities and shifting identities which leads him to believe that he is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress DisorderPTSD According to studies by the US Department of Veteran Affairs at least 30 of veterans suffer from PTSD caused by War Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder that is caused by exposure to a horrifying event or ordeal in which physical harm occurred or was threatened PTSD is not only caused by military combat it can also be caused by events such as natural or human caused disasters and violent personal assaults such as rape PTSD is a silent killer like most silent killers it is hard to detected until it is too late During his homecoming experience Conrad is faced with common PTSD symptoms but is quick to ignore them Such symptoms of PTSD are flashbacks or reliving a traumatic event feeling emotionally numb loss of memory feeling hopeless about the future irritability or anger being easily startled self-destructive behavior and difficulty maintaining close relationships Conrad thought to himself he did not want to see them dint want to think about the sandstorm or the other Marines or anything else from over there the rattle of machine guns the stink of the shitters the hot smoky air the closed faces of the people on the streets he wanted none of those thoughts in his headRobinson 8 Conrad could not escape his thoughts of the war it was like Iraq was forever a part
