One of the most contemporary contradictive issues is economic development and its affect on democratization in authoritarian regimes There are numbers of Successful and less successful well economically developed authoritarian regimes but the focus of this paper will solely be on Russia In order to demonstrate how Russian economic development started and what affect it had towards democratization from the end of Communism I will use a timeline paper structure which will be straightforward to follow Amount of terminologies will be minimal and the main ones to be aware of are KGB A former Soviet Union security police and meaning of USSR Union of Soviet Socialist Republics I would recommend this paper to anyone interested in economic development and democracy and especially debates surrounding this theme because of its complexity which will be showed in this paper This paper will start from 1980s and move steadily towards 2013 analysing factors which would facilitate a reader to understand the whole process of economic development on democratization Next paragraph will start with a bit of background of Communism and what factors caused it to collapse at the first place Russia has its democratization roots traced to 1980s when Kremlin and Gorbachev were main democracy promoters Back in 1980s Russia was already dependent on oil and natural resources with autocratic political regime Politicians were previously aware in 1980s about Oil Curse which illustrated that Russian economy and political freedom were dependent on oil prices Brown Archie2001 In early 1980s after the collapse of one party Leninist state Gorbachev came up with an initiative to integrate Russia in a global economy liberalize state and increase privatization but wasnt as much aware of structural matters which were necessary to sustain democracy Russian economy was under a revolution country was in a deep recession and disappointed about Communism citizens saw liberal democracy as a best system for political and economic modernization In late 1980s Gorbachevs institutional reforms created
