In Letter from Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr responded to criticism that thought his activities were unwise and untimelyKing 411 In the letter King as president of Southern Christian leadership conference explained why he had to do direct action in Birmingham He illustrated with examples of the prophets of the eighth century and the Apostle Paul to emphasize his reasons From the letter we can feel indeed that he loved peace He strongly insisted on nonviolent activities Even though such activates might hurt the participants themselves King still thought these activities were the best way to solve the problem they were facing The full letter was emotional and powerful King emphasized that direction action is the most effective way for African Americans to gain freedom and justice rather than depending on the change of the governmentOne reason is that negotiations were helpless for African American to get what they want King said that they had a talk with the leads of Birminghams economic community In this negotiation King asked the leads to remove the humiliating racial signs in the city Even though they made promises after a few months King found they were the victim of a broken promiseKing 413 Most signs were still there It was just one example that the government didnt do what they had promised to do In Kings four basic steps of nonviolent campaign direct action was the last step they could do But the government cheated them again and again Anyone would lose hope and patience if the government didnt do anything After so many failure negotiations Kings disappointment settled deep in his heart He didnt have any reason to trust the government but prepare for direct actionDirect actions have the power to press the government to attach great importance to Kings demand As King said Non-violent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to
