It has been 24 years since the Cold War ended and both Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev deserve credit for working together to overcome this major struggle of the 20th century Since the war concluded many people have argued over which leader truly put an end to it This essay will discuss the vital contributions of both presidents as well as how they worked together to end the war Ronald Reagan the 40th president of the United States had a different view of the world compared to others The one big thing Reagan knew was the power and value of human freedom and that was his defining principle Reagan took a different approach than most other presidents when dealing with communism in fact he was the first president to make defeating communism a primary goal Reagan spent 40 years battling communism and it oftentimes made him pay less attention to other aspects of his life His tug-of-war with communism cost him his first wife and granted him four assassination attempts after the fourth he realized defeating communism was his God given purpose Today when people look at the situation Reagan was in and the decisions he made people agree with him but during the actual time of the crisis he launched most of his initiatives alone Public opinion was crucially important to a number of the 20th century American presidents Eisenhower Roosevelt and Nixon were all cautious of how they were viewed in the public eye but Reagan didnt seem to care how he was seen Reagan was devoted to abolishing communism and even though there was widespread disapproval of many of his ideologies he embraced individualism and ignored the attacks and negativity In 1981 he approved of huge defense increases even though most of his cabinet members as well as former presidents Nixon and Ford disagreed Reagan launched the Strategic Defense Initiative almost entirely alone and he only informed
