Being in the upper echelons of a company demands many responsibilities for the care of those around you Top management is put in a position where their actions decide the financial futures of the company employees and investors People in high corporate positions should act ethically when choosing decisions that will have an impact to those that are helping the company strive and succeed What started out as a process to reward individuals for their hard work toward the betterment of the company soon was being used by unethically by some Repricing and backdating of stock options have been used to reward individuals who did not rightfully earn it at the expense of others When looking at these actions through various ethical perspectives we can see how actions of performing these corporate techniques are unethical Under the UtilitarianConsequentialism ethical theory it is very important to follow rules when pursuing something good or desirable A person must think of the consequences of their actions and what effect that decision might do Utilitarians view actions as right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness When viewing repricing and backdating of stock options through a utilitarian perspective Top management must weigh its choice of the people receiving the stock options benefiting the company with higher share price versus the ill effects it will produce in the event of untrue misleading financial information To further help in a dilemma such as this Utilitarianism can further be set in to two categories Act utilitarianism deems an action to be ethically acceptable it will produce a greater balance of good over evil Rule utilitarianism states we should the follow the road that will produce a greater balance of good over evil A person who attempts to partake in fraudulent practices for personnel gain while producing unhappiness in those that have invested in the company and in the long-term
