Everyone knows that a lot of things have changed since the 1950s and earlier My grandmother grew up in the 1940s and 1950s I sat down with her and asked her some questions about what life was like back then I did not realize that so many things had changed until I actually talked to herSuch as when I asked her about the punishment they received in school She answered my question and I could not believe that they had to do some of those things She told me they would have to stand in the corner or face the blackboard or you were taken to the office to get paddled by the principal Another thing they had to do was write I will not talk in class at least one hundred times on the board Now days when students get into trouble we get a detention or suspended for three daysI also asked her when they started school and she said after Labor Day I couldnt believe it because we start school at the beginning of August now She added that she got out of school a week before Memorial Day which is about the same time that we get out of school Her school years were shorter because most kids had to work to help provide for the family Basketball football and track only the boys played sports and you only played schools in your area The cheerleaders and students would take a fan bus to away games and it cost between 10 and 25 cents depending on where the game was At that time there were eleven high schools Owensville Fort Branch Haubstadt Mackey Oakland City Francisco Princeton Patoka Decker Hazelton and Mt Olympus in Gibson county and we played Cynthiana Poseyville New Harmony and Mt Vernon Tourneys and sectionals were awesome Grandma answered after being asked about sportsAfter the questions about school I asked my grandma about her family life I
