1 Preface This essay will examine how Bukowski mirrored his experiences his socialisation and his professional life in his texts considering as example two of his poems Commerce and The Great Escape and other sources The main part of this work will be a formal stylistic and textual analysis of the mentioned poems Also this essay will try to touch on his intentions when writing this poesy A possible problem is the poets objection to an extended interpretation of his works He did not help deconstructing his texts by talking about their meaning too often A resort to analytical techniques and his background would probably help dodging this hurdle but also means that any exegesis of his work would be partially theoretical In that respect some parts of this essay could seem to hang in the balance Moreover the literature search can be comlicated further because the writer although dead is still quite recent and modern Accordingly there may be few books that deal with his late works This exactly the reason why an essay on details of his works could be fairly absorbing in fact This essay will be structured as follows First of all a short biography will briefly irradiate Charles Buk Bukowskis life and some of its highpoints The next chapter will revolve around Bukowskis experiences and stance concerning labour Then there will be two chapters dealing with the above mentioned poems 2 Body 21 Short biography of Charles Bukowski Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach Germany on the 16th of August His father was a US American soldier his mother was German The familiy moved to Los Angeles USA where he lived for fifty years He commenced writing lyric poetry at the age of thirty-three Charles Bukowski is relatively well-known and highly acclaimed for his prose work and narrative poetry but during his lifetime and even later on he was a heavily contended writer as well being even labelled
