A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin tells a short story of a woman whofeels sorrow of being a full time wife and mom Even with her husbandshelp and concern she sinks deeper into depression Nevertheless he istender and receptive to her he is responsible for her tragic deathbecause he does not truly understand her takes over all domestic jobsand never bring her to the doctorIn the beginning the husband is described as durable andreceptive however in reality he is neither durable nor receptiveHe never listens to his wife carefully or tries to undertand hersuffering with heart but isolates her from family As this quote saysOnce upon a time there once was a wife and mother one too many times14 she could not identify herself She does not want to be a mom orwife forever in her life she wants to be independent Therefore havinga child and being with family make her sick However her husband onlysees her as a wife and mother of his son He does not realize her needsand wants as a womanAfter the woman could barely see her own child her husband hires ahousekeeper to take a load off her mind As the girl does allhousekeeping the woman has hatred toward the girl because the girlachieves everything that she could not complete The woman also feelsjealous and inferior towards the girl of becoming intimate with thebody To bring her out of the depression her husband should make herassociate more with family and support her to achieve that she wants todo in her life He also should remind her that she is independent womanand family always needs herSince the story was written in 1971 there might be less medicine orresearch about depression In order to cure her the husband should takeher to the doctor Instead he makes her a drought everyday she evenseems like addicted to it A melancholiac needs love and communicationhowever the husband neglects her by slipping notes as a form
