Early Settlers Life was very hard for settlers and immigrants in America in the 19th century and even more so for women They had to struggle through many tough experiences to make it in America Most people lived hard miserable lives but some persevered to become wealthy and live happy lives Immigrants had to face a lot just to make it to America Immigrants had two possible ways to get over to America One way was for a wealthy person to pay their way over in turn for the immigrant to work for the person for a certain number of years Another way was for people to work and earn the money themselves People worked in other countries for entire lifetimes in hope that they could raise the small fortune necessary to send a child across the ocean to America to find a better life If a person got enough money to make the voyage over to America they still had the problem of making the long treacherous journey alive Immigrants were stuffed into ships with meager rations to endure the crossing Only the healthiest strongest and luckiest survived Often upon arriving in America immigrants were sold off as slaves or prostitutes They had to work for many years to earn the money from the crossing Very seldom were Immigrants able to get a well paying and job and have a good life at least in the first generation since they arrived Pioneers had it a little easier but not much Most of the time women were just wives expected to cook and take care of the children You rarely saw independent women living on the frontier alone To live a life like this you had to be courageous stubborn and very determined Even this wasnt always enough Sometimes the winters were just too cold or there just wasnt enough food for everyone to survive If I had the opportunity to
