Essay Assignment 1 Introduction to Feminist TheoryFall 2011 In present-day society sexism is an issue that has been a factor throughout history that has lead to oppression When a child is born it is taught to conform to the values and norms of their specific gender A child is shown that their biological traits determine their social standings in a sexist society These gender distinctions and rules are inevitable because they are forced and taught to young children by their caregiver In the reading Sexism and The Woman Identified Woman the authors submit a clear argument that sexism is a major issue as it leads to womens oppression In sexist societies since large emphasis is placed on the differences between the genders and their specific roles females involuntarily become oppressed because in society they are represented as this secondary gender lead by male dominance It is because of this dominance that they seek complete liberation and separation from males The reading titled Sexism written by Marilyn Frye defines sexism as a term that creates constitutes promotes or exploits any irrelevant or impertinent marking of the distinction between the sexes 18 Sexism marks the distinctive differences between the male and female gender and in particularly what their roles entail in society In the reading Frye ascertains that living in a sexist culture makes the sex of an individual significant because it helps to define their social standings as a male or female In the early stages of development when a child is born the female role is always emphasized as less superior to the males because they do not posses the same biological trait as the males the phallus Rubin 44 Being female and living in a sexist society where the differences between the genders are important make it significantly harder for the female to succeed based on her anatomical traits The fact that being female in these societies is less superior to males
