It has been one hundred and fifty-two years since the Civil War we have collected countless information and statistics on the war from casualties to people injured to how many regiments there were We have collected letters and diaries from the soldiers that served in the North and the South and have countless firsthand accounts of how life for the soldiers fighting on the front line We have come so far that we even have reenactments of each battle It is important to know what happened on the frontlines but it is just as important to know what life was like for the women back home We all generalized idea that women stuck by their husband cooking cleaning and taking care of the children however life for them was much more complex and difficult Besides the obvious house chores they had to learn to do all the things that men took care of the yard work paying the bills providing food for the family and finding an income to help keep the family stable Some didnt follow the social norm and divorced their husbands and turned to prostitution Those who did stick by they had to learn to be alone be strong and be the breadwinner while their husbands were away They were fighting a war of their own By using the letters of Captain Andrew Upson one can conclude what the life of his wife Elizabeth was like in the town of Southington during the Civil War era Through reading the letters of Captain Upson one can truly understand the difficulty and the struggles that women had to face while their men were fighting Also by using different books on Women in the Civil War one can understand what a challenge it was for them to enter the work force that only men were allowed to do Captain Upson was an asset to the Union victory as well as a local
