Wessex basin characterises the complexity of the geological deformation that took place in southern England The Wessex basin derived from a series of fault controlled sub-basins which were superimposed by the propagating Variscan Orogeny The Variscan Orogeny affected the stronger part of the lithosphere and increased tensional stresses which in sequence developed thrust faults In early Mesozoic the thrust faults were reactivated by extensional detachment which commenced and lead to subsequent series of syn-depostional sub-basins These sub-basins worked as depocentre for transgression-regression Mesozoic sediments forming the bulk sediment deposition in Wessex basin The sediments in Wessex basin has been divided into three stage permio-triassic Jurassic to early cretaceous and middle to late cretaceous Permio-trassic sediment consists of continental silicalstic sediments of very coarse grained imbricate conglomerate which was thought deposited at time of relatively dry environment It is assumed that the conglomerate was reposed by intermittent ephemeral processes However the conglomerate unit is overlain by aeolian sandstone which probably deposited in different environment than the conglomerate These two conformably units make the Sherwood Group and may operate as good reservoir for Devonian and Carboniferous hydrocarbon Jurassic to early cretaceous deposition appears to form the eccense of sediment occurrences in the Wessex basin These syn-depositional sediments are divided into transgression respectively regression deposition Main sediment supply in Jurassic to early cretaceous from sea level rise comprises of mature Lias Clay the Oolite series the Oxford Clay and the Kimmeridge Clay Conversely sediments induced by regression in the Wessex basin consist of Bridport Sands the Coralian and Wealden Group Some of the sediments depositing in the basin exhibit alternating individual marine beds with changing sediment compositions which records what is actually happened during the deposition These systematic rhythmic sediments also help to interpret what is occurring with the sea These interval sediments are generally interpreted marine shelf low energy environment For instance Upper Lias indicate such cyclitic processes of interbeds of laminated organic rich
