After the end of the First World War Germans Weimar republic which was established was in chaos During the First World War Germany lost 2 million troops In the meantime the country suffered high unemployment rampant inflation and bitter political differences between the right and the left 3 of the things which made people start to support Hitler were because of the political social and economic problems People in Germany were tired of their poor quality of life Hitler promised to make Germany proud again - it was exactly what people wanted to hear The political instability with no party ever commanding an overall majority in the Parliament was a common phenomenon in the political life of the country For example in 1919 the Communist Party attempted an armed revolution in Berlin but was defeated In March 1920 Dr Wolfgang Kapp led an army coup which aimed at setting up a military dictatorship It was also crushed by the loyalist army Secondly there was political violence which often culminated in civil war Very often the left and the right wing paramilitary groups engaged in street battles which left many people dead or injured Many communist party leaders were assassinated in cold blood as well as leading supporters of democracy Thus political violence aggravated the prevailing instability Thirdly the upper class and the army were anti-democracy In addition the leading army officers belonging to the upper class never accepted Germanys military defeat in the First World War As such they had no sympathy for democracy and longed for a return to the pre-1914 era of authoritarian and military Fourthly the people hated the regime because of its agreement to pay the reparations as demanded by the Treaty of Versailles To the nationalists in Germany that was an admittance of guilt for starting the war hence the punishment of the reparation They could not tolerate it and continued to look for ways
