In the novel The Grapes of Wrath Jim Casy and Tom Joad have a very strong relationship which impacts each other significantly At the beginning of the novel Casy who is a former preacher is telling Tom about what he believes in I figgered about the Holy Sperit and the Jesus road I figgered Why do we got to hang it on God or Jesus Maybe I figgered maybe its all men an all women we love may be thats the Holy Sperit--the human sperit-- the whole shebang Maybe all men got one big soul everbodys a part ofp 24 Tom listens as Casy preaches to him about what he has learned and his new discoveries Even though Tom doesnt think he actually listens to what he is being told it still sticks to himCasy is the type of man who contemplates about things that are going on I aint sleepin said Casy I got too much to puzzle withp 60 Tom impacts Casys life greatly also Without him Casy wouldnt have made it to California Casy also looks up to Tom in the way he fixes the car with his hands He also cares for Tom and he cares for the people who are going hungry He knows that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer Casy says If he needs a million acres to make him feel rich seems to me he needs it cause he feels awful poor inside hisself and if hes poor hisself there aint no million acre gonna make him feel richp 207 Casy knows what is going on as he tells Tom all of what he is seeing and thinking and Tom embraces everything Casy is telling him even though he doesnt recognize itTom and Casys relationship is strong strong enough for Casy to take the blame for something that Tom has done Casy gets arrested and soon he realizes something in that jail
