In todays society it is nearly impossible to not know somebody who is associated with the upper class group We hear about these people through social media television shows and we may even know one of them personally This group of people can be divided pretty easily as being either shallow with their money or they may be a philanthropist In the book The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald it is clear to the reader that Jay Gatsby is a very shallow man when it comes to the amount of money he has Throwing extravagant parties to win a woman over and spending money on himself foolishly On the other hand there are many people in todays society that are philanthropist and use their large amounts of money to help others Oprah Winfrey is perfect example of this she has used her money to build and fund an extravagant school in Africa for underprivileged girls Bill Gates is another example he has funded the Bill Melinda Foundation to help with many problems throughout the world The differences between the hollowness of the upper class in The Great Gatsby and the philanthropist of the upper class today vary significantlyBeing a part of the upper class in The Great Gatsby means being very selfish and shallow with the money that you have Mr Gatsby fits into this class by practicing prodigality by only spending money on himself to better his life and by using his money to impress the woman who he loves Gatsby is known for his meretricious parties that have orchestras dancing delicious food and bars and tons of peopleAt least once a fortnight a crop of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsbys enormous garden On buffet tables garnished with glistening hors doeuvre spiced baked hams crowded against salads
