What is your greatest fear I peer over the mound of blankets Rubys looking at me inquisitively My brain is filled with white noise I lie back and reach into my pocket for what feels like my last cigarette I twirl it slowly through my fingers Her room is so fucking optimistic There are paintings of flowers hanging on the walls and Nicholas Sparks novels placed neatly on her bedside table that she is still planning to read Her entire life is one big plan for someday when shes old enough See Ruby was always like that she had known what she was going to do with her life since as long as I can remember Shes ready to work for whatever she wants And then theres me I had been friends with Ruby my entire life I dont how we kept it going for so long with me being so reckless and her being so flawless Ruby and I were like ying and yang a balance of heartache and delight While I was taking care of my alcoholic mother her mother was entering her into spelling bees and beauty pageants When so-called dad was off somewhere in Europe her daddy was driving her to ballet class I light the cigarette I used to sit next to Ruby in all classes until she decided it was best to move seats as her parents had been complaining about her marks The only time she would ever have fun was when I would steal her away from her mothers grasp for the weekends We would dive into the icy waters of the indoor community pool I would swim to the bottom of the pool and open my eyes and even though the chlorine would burn I didnt care because it was so glorious to see through the water and look up at the abstracted glass ceiling I inhaleIt was our own escape we needed to keep
