Recently there have been more and more cases of professional athletes comingforward to the public announcing their infection with human immunodeficiency diseaseHIV Cooper et al 1 When the first few cases were brought to the publics attentionsome athletes were not very willing to play on the same court or field though as newinformation became available about HIV their opinions began to change For examplewhen Earvin Magic Johnson informed the public that he was infected with the virusmany players became very weary No one wanted to play on the same court as him dueto fear of being infected so Magic soon retired However four years later when hedecided to return to basketball almost all the players who had felt that he should not beable to play had different feelings Within those four years much new information aboutthe virus had been learned resulting in Magic being very welcomed back to the sport Therefore athletes who have contracted HIV should be allowed to play sports with thesame regulations and rights as any other athletes Earvin Magic Johnson was one of the greatest basketball players to ever play thegame When he discovered that he was HIV infected he then retired Some other starplayers such as Karl Malone and Charles Barkley had very negative things to say aboutplaying on the same court with him after his announcement However he did return fouryears later to play again Malone who had expressed doubts before said he was happy Gibson 2to see Johnson back Weve all learned a lot and Barkleys attitude toward Johnson waswere not going to have unprotected sex with him were just going to play basketballTharp 65 Later that season during a hard-fought game his arm was cut and began tobleed This was the night he decided to retire for good not
