TV talk shows present us with an almost endless array of celebrities who tell us that greatest good in life is personal fulfillment Many of us get the impression that wanting something or wanting to do something makes it right and that we have a right to pursue whatever we want regardless of the consequences for ourselves or others In an entitled essay explain why you believe that this notion of personal fulfillment is good or bad for both individuals and societyPoet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said The purpose of life is not to be happy It is to be useful to be honorable to be compassionate and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well Some of historys greatest achievements were built upon honor compassion and usefulness but more and more these qualities are being forgotten Personal fulfillment is too often at the cornerstone of the decision making process increasingly decisions are based solely on what people want A notion of personal fulfillment which lacks a regard of consequences for oneself and other people is reckless and harmful society and individuals will suffer economically socially and physically from this notion What if Henry Ford JP Morgan and John D Rockefeller gave up on business and devoted their lives to fishing golf or art Would these men have lived a more fulfilling life I dont believe so these men made millions if not billions of dollars and were able to have anything they ever desired Society would also have been less fulfilling suffering economically without the basis of todays economic structure Our economy requires self-sacrifice self-discipline and determination it rewards individuals who focus on what is right rather than wants and desires As the notion of self-fulfillment changes and evolves individuals who focus on their personal desires will spend less time working making money and stimulating the economy Without making
