As young students we are often taught that an environment is a small unit of land or water While this is considered an environment we often lose sight of the fact that the globe that we all inhabit is also considered an environment in and of itself When the explosions of the Fukishima power plants occurred in Japan the aftermath was felt throughout the Pacific Ocean the islands of the Indies and the West Coast of North America and debris with nuclear radiation are still being washed ashore every day Though the event can be considered isolated it affected the total global environment that we all live in dramatically In this global environment we often divide the countries that inhabit the land mass into several different categories The two most common that we hear on the news is the distinction between a developed and a developing nation A developed nation usually refers to one that has access to luxuries and modern benefits that we usuallyexperience in the United States A developing nation can usually be classified as one that has problems providing basic necessities to its people such as clean food water and protection These nations are also often characterized by being torn with violent internal religious or political conflict Developing nations often experience lack of accessible and affordable healthcare In 1966 the ratio of doctor per patient in Africa averaged at about 1 per 100000 Brown 1966 These numbers have increased marginally but at a slow rate of growth since then Health care can often cost a family a weeks worth of wages or profit from crops and livestock Brown 1966 forcing many families to consider whether they should seek professional medical help or feed their families Often times feeding families clean food and water can also be an undertaking in itself For example if we look at the major inflation in Zimbabwe these past few years has caused individuals to fight for clean
