While I wouldnt call myself an ardent patriot I nonetheless love my country The Star Spangled Banner represents American tradition and pride Bands play it before every football game and our nations most talented voices perform it at every Super Bowl Since fifth grade I have been performing this piece time and time again on the stage in the music room and on the football field We sing the song as Americans full of heart and soul but the line that has always struck me is the last- Oer the land of the free and the home of the braveWhat is the land of the free Where is the home of the brave And what do these lines represent and how are they significant To many Americans these lines are just words written by Francis Scott Key and put to the ironic tune of an English potato-eating song Growing up I have always admired the courage and esprit de corps of American fighting men Our country was forged from the blood and steel of a band of patriots wanting independence from an oppressive empire The freedom that these men gained was retained through the efforts of generations of fighting men and branded into our nations history on the meadows of Gettysburg the scorched earth of Belleau Wood the sands of Normandy and Inchon and among the dusty sandstorms of Fallujah No matter the opposition the preservation of freedom and liberty has always been possible due to the fighting spirit of American soldiers Unlike my parents I was born in the United States of America as a citizen I never had to experience any sort of life under any sort of government in any nation short of the greatest in the world Every morning I wake up and go to school sit through eight hours of instruction and walk home to supper and homework A boy my age in Mozambiques daily routine is without a doubt
