For centuries first world women have been held to a standard of which inorder to gain respect they must obey moral codes These codesinvolve dressing in a conservative manner staying a virgin untilmarriage having nurturing mannerisms and obeying men Recently thoughfirst world societies begun transforming along with the values of oldmorals Morals formed only a few decades ago are now being devalued andeven ridiculed Sure some of those old values deserve to be overthrownall together But why is it that throwing away self respect is so easilyaccepted by women these days Perhaps that is because of who our rolemodels have become and who is creating these role models in the firstplaceAs people who are influenced by the media we tend to idolize whoeverthe media wants us to idolize Observing the way famous celebrities usedto dress it is clear that there has been a change from women in the pastand women now Famous women from the 50s and 60s such as Lucille Ballfrom I Love Lucy Audrey Hepburn Janis Joplin Dusty Springfield allrepresent what self respect once looked like If you search for imagesof these women online you will find pictures of them that show them asconservative young women Now if you search for any woman in popculture within the recent generation you will see how these newcelebrities exploit their bodies for fame Women have been transformedfrom being known for their true talent to being known as seductive andattractive Perhaps this transition is a result of the threat men arefeeling now that women have gained power and a voice This threatmotivates men to use media in order to distract women from theirpotential power This article will look at the way media portrays femaleidols in the US as seductive sex symbols It will help the audiencegain insight on how the appearance of female celebrities in the mediaaffects society and why the people in power use these kinds of images torepresent womenStarting in the 70s the amount of
