Pain is universal Due to this there is an exceptionally large body of work dedicated to covering the topic with ideas ranging from why pain is useful to why people shouldnt have to deal with pain to how to best treat pain using medication and more In recent years academic journals solely dedicated to the topic of pain have emerged Specifically in psychology both pain tolerance and pain perception have been studied in a cognitive manner However some researchers have begun to draw an inversely proportional relationship between the tolerance of pain and the perception of pain In this literature review we will cover the topic of how pain is perceived and how pain perception is modified by cognitive processes and how the correlation of pain perception and tolerance is illusoryFirst lets cover a study by Eccleston and Crombez where they discuss the attentive nature of pain This sets the tones and ideas for the body of studies that follow Eccleston and Crombez 1999 proposed a new model of how pain perception seizes and demands attention First they reviewed traditional attention theory discussing Broadbent and Kahneman They also discussed Norman and Shallices idea that attention isnt exclusively bound to limiting resources Following this they covered the factors that are the most closely associated with pain They summarized that pain disrupts ongoing engagement of individuals until it is attended to Unsurprisingly they found that factors such as high-intensity novelty and threat of catastrophe tended to lead to greater disruptions of individuals They also looked at environmental factors associated with pain and proposed the idea that acute levels of arousal and positive affect could possibly take attentional priority over pain Eccleston and Crombez then proposed a functional model of pain interruption Essentially this model states that as pain is encountered resources are shifted away from the focal tasks and to the pain until the pain has been attended to They conclude based on the model
