Life in the 1940s was very different from life today for African Americans Segregation due to Jim Crow laws was famous in the 1940s while World War II initiated the largest movement of African Americans African Americans in this time period were struggling for their freedom and civil rights While heroes of this time begin to make changes sit-ins boycotts and other nonviolent acts began to start The day to day existence of African Americans in the 1940s was simply living in poverty working on plantations and being segregated Most states required the Jim Crow laws The Jim Crow laws separated the blacks and whites in public Black children and white children attended separate schools Water fountains bathrooms and restaurants were all segregated Blacks and whites were not even allowed at the time to marry each other The Jim Crow laws were finally put to an end around 1965World War II initiated the largest movement of African Americans in the 1940s During World War II poverty the lack of education for their children segregation jobs and limited opportunities were all reasons that led some African Americans to run north During WWII poverty really struck the African Americans They were already poor and struggling this was a bit too much piling on top of them In the 1940s education for African Americans was hard to get and find Booker T Washington a famous African American educator met with Julius Rosenwald in May 1911 They established a treasury to improve African American education in the South By 1932 Over 5357 schools had been built across the South Jobs during this time for African Americans were also hard to come by The south was mostly famous for their sugar tobacco and cotton Cotton prices went down from eighteen to five cents a pound This was bad news for the black farmers The black farmers slipped into debt and had no other way of making money It was
